Cincinnati is dealing with the 22nd worst flood in the city’s history as the Ohio River crested at just over 60.5 feet this past weekend. The flooding has spurred road closures and inundated riverfront communities.
And while those near the river are the most severely impacted, residents throughout the city are dealing with water infiltration after heavy rains. According to the National Weather Service, the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport has received 7.79 inches of precipitation this month, which is 3 times the average and marks the third wettest February on record.
One of the most common causes of basement flooding is a problem with the sump pump. You can test your sump by first removing any debris from the pit and pouring in enough water to get the pump to cycle. It’s also recommended to have a battery backup that kicks in when the power goes out.
However, if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of a flooded basement, it’s important to know what steps to take. Below is a printer-friendly guide covering the key steps.
